ChatGPT Begins Ad Testing Today, According to Reports
OpenAI is set to begin testing advertisements in ChatGPT today, as reported. These “clearly labeled” ads will be positioned in a distinct section below your chat, a detail OpenAI shared last month.
A source familiar with the matter indicated that OpenAI anticipates ads will contribute to less than half of its long-term revenue. Recently, Anthropic showcased a Super Bowl ad that humorously targeted OpenAI, claiming “ads are coming to AI,” but not to its own AI chatbot, Claude. The version that aired during the game was toned down after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described the campaign as “clearly dishonest.”
The ads will be visible to users who are logged in and using the free app or those subscribed to the more affordable Go plan. OpenAI assures that your conversations with ChatGPT will remain private from advertisers, although the ads will be “optimized based on what’s most helpful to you.” According to OpenAI, advertisers will not influence ChatGPT’s responses.
In an internal memo, Altman informed employees that OpenAI plans to roll out an updated chat model this week, shortly after the release of a more advanced version of its AI coding agent, Codex. He also mentioned that ChatGPT is “back to exceeding 10% monthly growth.” OpenAI last reported having 800 million weekly users as of October.
