ChatGPT Implements Age Prediction to Limit Content Access for Minors

OpenAI has introduced age prediction features in ChatGPT to enhance protections for younger users. This initiative, revealed in December, aligns with updated guidelines for engaging with teens and reflects a growing trend among online platforms like Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Roblox to implement age-gating measures.

The age prediction model analyzes various behavioral and account-level indicators, such as the user’s declared age, account age, activity times, and usage trends. For users identified as under 18, additional safeguards will be enforced to limit exposure to sensitive content, including:

* Graphic violence or gory imagery
* Viral challenges that may promote risky or harmful behaviors among minors
* Sexual, romantic, or violent roleplay scenarios
* Content depicting self-harm
* Material that encourages extreme beauty standards, unhealthy dieting, or body-shaming

Adult users mistakenly categorized as under 18 can regain full access by verifying their age through a selfie. The rollout of these age prediction features is happening globally, with the exception of the EU, where OpenAI plans to implement them in the coming weeks to meet regional regulations.

These new age prediction capabilities and protective measures follow significant concerns, including a lawsuit related to teen suicide and discussions in a Senate panel regarding the potential risks chatbots pose to minors.
