Check Out This Minecraft Mod That Transforms It Into a Deltarune-Inspired Turn-Based RPG!

Minecraft’s combat has often felt a bit stale and repetitive. While Mojang has added a few new weapons over the years, hardcore combat enthusiasts have largely turned to mods for a more exciting experience. After trying numerous combat mods, I can confidently say that none have reimagined Minecraft’s combat system quite like Soulbound, which transforms the game into a turn-based RPG inspired by Undertale and Deltarune.

Soulbound, created by modder Pixelcite, gained significant traction following its major 2.0 update released this week, amassing an impressive 140,000 downloads on a popular Minecraft modding platform.

After diving into Soulbound for a few minutes, I found it to be quite impressive. The mod clearly draws inspiration from Deltarune and Undertale, and it can even be customized to resemble Earthbound. However, it doesn’t simply slap these games onto Minecraft. When I created my character, I had to allocate stats, choose buffs, and select from various combat styles. Upon entering the world, it looked like Minecraft, but with a few human enemies scattered around. Engaging in battle revealed original bullet-hell attack patterns reminiscent of Deltarune’s combat system, making for a fun gameplay experience!

Soulbound also allows players to create dark worlds, which are akin to alternate dimensions in Deltarune. These manifest in Minecraft as procedurally generated realms with customizable themes. I crafted a wool-themed dark world by stabbing the ground of my makeshift hut with a knife.

One might assume that a mod of this magnitude was developed with the help of generative AI, but according to messages from moderators in Soulbound’s Discord server, that’s not the case. The modding platform it’s hosted on also requires users to disclose any generative AI involvement. I reached out to the lead developer for confirmation but didn’t receive a response.

Soulbound’s rapid rise in popularity comes right after a wave of poorly executed generative AI mods that saw players creating vibe-coded mods that awkwardly merged Minecraft with Elden Ring and Skyrim. After experiencing that trend (and enduring a tedious crossover mod where Minecraft’s blocks barely functioned), it’s a breath of fresh air to engage with a mod that thoughtfully blends two games together.
