China Unveils the Fastest Supercomputer in the World

China has once again claimed the title of the world’s fastest supercomputer, marking its first return to the top since 2018. The new powerhouse, LineShine, has dethroned El Capitan in the latest TOP500 rankings. This achievement comes despite stringent trade restrictions that limit the sale of advanced computing components to China from US companies, which still dominate the list with three of the top five supercomputers. Notably, LineShine operates without any GPUs, which are typically essential for modern supercomputing.

While topping the TOP500 is a significant achievement, it also sends a clear message from the Chinese government to the US. The previous administration implemented measures to restrict China’s access to chips from companies like NVIDIA and imposed heavy tariffs on trade. In response, China has focused on developing its own technology using more accessible and generalized CPUs. LineShine is powered by approximately 45,000 LX2 processors, each featuring 304 cores running at 1.55GHz, all interconnected via a specialized high-speed, low-latency network known as LingQi.

LineShine has made history as the first supercomputer to surpass the 2,000 exaflop threshold, boasting a performance that is 20 percent faster than El Capitan, the second-ranked system. However, it consumes 42.2 megawatts of power, which is significantly higher and less efficient compared to El Capitan’s 29.7 megawatts.
