It’s been four years since Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo last teamed up in the superhero flick Thor: Ragnarok, but the Marvel stars reunite in the new thriller Crime 101, albeit under very different circumstances.
Hemsworth portrays career thief Mike Davis, who is leaving law enforcement puzzled with his smooth jewelry heists along the 101 freeway, while Ruffalo plays Lou Lubesnick, the detective who believes he’s finally cracked the case, despite skepticism from his colleagues.
Though Mike and Lou are on opposing sides of the law, they share a unique connection, as they discuss with their co-star Halle Berry.
One reason Mike consistently evades capture is that he never harms anyone during his heists—he’s all about getting in and out with minimal impact. Conversely, Lou faces criticism from his peers for his non-aggressive approach. Essentially, both characters are non-violent men navigating violent environments.
“I was going to say yin and yang, but they’re actually more alike than different,” Hemsworth notes. “They both adhere to a code. They have strong moral values, and regardless of which side of the law they’re on, I believe they’re fundamentally good people.”
“And they respect each other,” Ruffalo adds.
“Yeah, they appreciate each other’s skills, even as one tries to catch the other,” Hemsworth agrees. “They’re rivals, but there’s a mutual respect there.”

Berry’s character, a frustrated insurance broker named Sharon, becomes entangled with Mike when their interests intersect. “They’re all pushed to their limits,” she explains. “And they have to make some tough moral choices.”
Directed by Bart Layton, known for American Animals, Crime 101 also features Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Nick Nolte, and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
