When it comes to the MCU’s god of thunder, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) has certainly faced his share of challenges. With most of his family gone and the weight of time resting on his shoulders, this hammer-wielding hero has learned a lot, experiencing both triumphs and setbacks. One of the most talked-about films was Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder, which received mixed reactions from fans and critics alike (though we enjoyed it). Hemsworth recently shared that the varying interpretations of Thor by different directors have significantly influenced his portrayal.

“Some directors had a clear vision of the character, while others struggled,” Hemsworth noted in a recent interview. “Even Joss Whedon admitted that Thor is a complex character to write, especially after he gains such power. Working with Taika was refreshing; I was ready for a change, and he felt the same way. We aimed to bring some unpredictability to the character.”

So, what’s next for Thor in the upcoming Avengers film, where he may reunite with Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and the rest to confront Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.)? Hemsworth suggests we’ll see a more experienced son of Odin, one who views his fellow heroes as somewhat trivial (Thor’s words, not ours).

“In the recent films, I felt like Thor had earned his place among the team. Before, I felt like the newcomer. I remember sitting around on Doomsday with all these fresh faces, thinking, ‘I should have more influence as this character,’” Hemsworth explained, without revealing which new Avengers were present. “Embracing that role, he feels more like one of the elders now. He’s around 2,000 years old, so we leaned into that aspect more than before.”

The latest trailer hints that this version of Thor is aware of the looming threats and what could be a final showdown (though Hemsworth has indicated he’d be open to a fifth Thor film). “There comes a time in life when you feel exhausted and weary, and we really leaned into that.”

We’ll find out how Thor confronts this new challenge when Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18. For all the latest Marvel updates, keep an eye on our upcoming MCU guide.
