Chris Pratt’s latest AI thriller receives one of his lowest Rotten Tomatoes ratings in a decade.

Marvel’s Chris Pratt and Dune’s Rebecca Ferguson star in the new AI thriller, Mercy, which has hit the scene with underwhelming reviews just ahead of its release.

Set in a near-future world, Mercy centers on Pratt’s character, a detective on trial for his wife’s murder. He has a mere 90 minutes to prove his innocence to an AI judge, portrayed by Ferguson. Despite the current buzz around AI, critics argue that Mercy fails to deliver a fresh perspective on the topic, instead recycling themes from classic sci-fi films like Minority Report and Blade Runner.

“Ultimately, Mercy isn’t aggressively bad, it’s just really dumb. It borrows the aesthetic of superior sci-fi films, without grasping the soul of the genre,” remarks a writer. Another critic adds that the film “purports to be a cautionary tale about putting legal justice into the hands of AI, but the movie’s real agenda is promoting the surveillance state as a way of fighting crime.”

Critics have also taken issue with the overall narrative, with one suggesting it’s “lazily written, chaotically directed and played out with all the zest of a convenience-store security video.” Another echoed this sentiment, stating that the performances and production feel like a first draft, lacking the polish needed to engage viewers.

On the flip side, some viewers found enjoyment in the film. One critic described Mercy as “ingenious and watchable stuff, with cheeky twists,” although they noted that the final shift to full-on action may veer into absurdity. Another concluded that “the movie turns out to be a notch or two better than you expect.”

As of now, Mercy holds an 18% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 44 reviews. This marks the lowest-rated film for Pratt in nearly 13 years, aside from the Netflix release The Electric State, while for Ferguson, it’s her lowest-rated project since the 2017 horror film The Snowman.

Mercy is set to hit theaters on January 23.
