Playing the role of Frankenstein’s monster in the new horror film The Bride! took a toll on Christian Bale, but not in the way you might expect.
The challenge wasn’t about embodying a psychologically tormented creature at odds with its creator; it was the grueling six hours spent in the makeup chair each day that really tested his limits.
“I would scream like crazy every day,” Bale shared. “Just to release the despair and all that restraint from sitting still for so long… I didn’t want to do it on the way to work because I thought I might cause an accident. And I didn’t want to do it alone because I figured everyone would think I was losing it.”
He continued, “By the end, the whole crew got involved because they heard us screaming. We’d open the doors, and gradually, like the Bride’s uprising, a few people would ask, ‘Can we join in?’ By the end, there were about 30 people rushing to the makeup trailer to scream along with us.”
Some horror fans think he might be overreacting. “Couldn’t he just put on some YouTube or something? Seems a bit excessive,” commented one user.
“Wow. I can’t imagine how awful it must be to get paid millions to sit in a chair for six hours,” another chimed in.
However, others empathize with his situation. “Everyone in the comments sounds like a drag,” one user noted. “Bale never said it wasn’t worth it. Jim Carrey had to get a CIA agent trained in torture resistance to survive the Grinch. They’re underestimating how tough it is to keep your body and face completely still for six hours starting at 4 AM, day after day.”
