Chrome Introduces Warning for Potentially Unsafe Websites

Google is rolling out a new safety feature for Chrome that enhances your awareness of potentially harmful websites before you visit them. The suspicious site warnings, which activate when Chrome’s Enhanced Protection is enabled, expand on a two-tiered system introduced for file downloads in 2024. This system provides distinct notifications for blocked files, categorizing them as either “suspicious” or “dangerous.”

With the new site warnings, a website will be flagged as suspicious if it shares characteristics with known phishing, malware, or scam sites. Google labels this warning as having a “lower confidence verdict,” indicating a potential risk of user harm. This means there’s a chance the site could be incorrectly flagged, so you should only proceed if you’re completely sure it’s safe. In contrast, warnings for “dangerous” sites come with a higher confidence verdict and indicate a “high risk of user harm,” so it’s best to steer clear of these entirely.

Identifying these warnings is straightforward. Notifications for suspicious sites will pop up on both desktop and mobile, dimming the webpage beneath while offering an option to “Mark as safe” if the site was flagged in error. The warning for dangerous sites is much more prominent, taking up nearly the entire screen with a solid red background.

Additionally, Google has enhanced Gemini-powered scam detection for users with Enhanced Protection, coinciding with the redesign of the browser warnings.
