Civilization 7’s CEO Acknowledges Major Update Removes Controversial Feature, Calling It a ‘Bridge Too Far’
Civilization 7 has just revealed its Test of Time update, set to launch on May 19. Firaxis is touting this as the most transformative patch since the game debuted in February 2025. A standout feature of this update is the overhaul of civilizations. Players will now have the option to stick with a single civilization throughout an entire match, eliminating the need to switch with each new age. This mechanic, which sparked considerable debate among fans, is now optional, marking a significant step in Civilization 7’s journey to improve post-launch.
“By far the most-requested addition, you’ll be able to play as one civ throughout an entire campaign when the Test of Time update goes live,” the development team shared in a recent blog post. “While you’ll still have the option to evolve your empire into a different civilization during Age Transitions, the ability to play as one civ across the span of history is something many players hold dear as a core component of the Civ experience. When playing as these Time-Tested civs, the new Syncretism mechanic will allow you to create all-new builds by adopting the Unique Units or Infrastructure from another civilization that’s currently in its Apex Age, or double down on what makes your civ unique with Affirmation.”
Despite its challenges, Civilization 7’s Steam review rating is still struggling, but Take-Two’s Strauss Zelnick remains optimistic about the game’s long-term value, asserting that the 2025 release continues to be profitable for its publishing label.
“Every time there’s a new Civ, the team at Firaxis considers: ‘How do we push the envelope far enough that it makes sense to buy this new game? And how do we preserve what people love enough so that they’re not disaffected?’ We misstepped with Civ VII, but it wasn’t for lack of effort. I take responsibility for that,” he mentioned in a recent interview. “We’ve implemented a number of fixes and will keep doing so. The game is solid and profitable for us, but I think we aimed a bit too high from the consumer’s perspective.”
The upcoming Test of Time patch will also revamp the Victory conditions to reward a broader range of activities and sustained dominance during matches. Additionally, a new Triumph system will replace the existing Legacy Paths, providing more diverse and challenging optional objectives throughout gameplay. Players can also look forward to a new map, narrative events, and other exciting content included in this free update.
