In the original Alone in the Dark from 1992, you delve into a haunted mansion set in 1920s Louisiana, trying to uncover its dark secrets and escape. The second installment shifts gears slightly, featuring Edward Carnby once more as he faces off against mobsters and pirates, all with a supernatural twist. Alone in the Dark 3 sees Carnby on the trail of a missing film crew in a town cursed by dark forces.

The Alone in the Dark series is often credited with laying the groundwork for the 3D survival horror genre, predating iconic franchises like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. While those series have enjoyed greater longevity, Alone in the Dark made its mark early on. A reboot was attempted in 2024, featuring Jodie Comer and David Harbour, but it failed to resonate with critics and fell short of sales expectations, leading to the closure of developer Pieces Interactive.

If you’re interested in experiencing this foundational survival horror series for free, make sure to add the Alone in the Dark games to your GOG library by Thursday, February 5, at 9 a.m. Eastern.
