Clair Obscur Dominates at the DICE Awards with Multiple GOTY Wins

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 continues its impressive streak, taking home multiple Game of the Year awards. Sandfall Interactive’s title secured five accolades at the DICE Awards in Las Vegas, including the coveted top honor. It also triumphed in categories such as Role-Playing Game of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction, Art Direction, and Story, adding to its growing collection of accolades.

Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yōtei also made a mark, winning three awards: Adventure Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Character for the protagonist Atsu, and Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition. This last win was a bit of a surprise, given Clair Obscur’s dominance in soundtrack awards this season.

Blue Prince snagged the indie game and game design awards, while Hades 2 was recognized as Action Game of the Year, and Arc Raiders took home the title of Online Game of the Year.

While The Game Awards are often dubbed the Oscars of gaming due to their high profile, the DICE Awards align more closely with the spirit of the Oscars, as they are voted on by industry professionals similar to the film Academy. In contrast, The Game Awards rely on a media jury. The DICE jury tends to avoid controversial choices, often reflecting a consensus similar to that of The Game Awards.

Winning the GOTY at the DICE Awards brings Clair Obscur one step closer to achieving a rare sweep of the Big Five game of the year awards: the Golden Joystick Awards, The Game Awards, DICE, and the GDC Awards, with the BAFTA Games Awards serving as the unpredictable final challenge in April. Only one game has ever claimed all five honors: 2023’s Baldur’s Gate 3.
