Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Developers Embrace Creative Freedom in Their Next Game, Prioritizing Personal Passion Over Popular Opinion

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 emerged as one of the standout surprises of 2025, with Sandfall Interactive’s first J’RPG taking home numerous awards and rapidly amassing a dedicated fanbase. With such success, the pressure is on for their next title, but the developers are committed to following their own creative instincts rather than succumbing to fan expectations.

In a recent interview, Sandfall Interactive’s COO and production director, François Meurisse, acknowledged the pressure from fans and critics regarding their upcoming project, stating, “I feel there is a bit of pressure,” but emphasized that “it’s not so important to us.”

He elaborated, “We’ll have time to really focus on the next game. We have some fantastic ideas we’re eager to explore, and we’re not starting from scratch. The team has gained five more years of experience, so we might be able to create something truly great.”

Lead writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen echoed this sentiment, admitting that while she tends to be a “people pleaser” and is aware of the expectations from their growing fanbase, she believes in prioritizing their own creative vision. “I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about that at all,” she said, but added, “Creatively, we’ve always let our North Star be our own personal taste in what we think is cool and what we enjoy. I’ve seen too many shows and books lose their essence trying to please everyone. We need to trust our instincts and stay true to the studio’s vision.”

This approach clearly paid off with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Following its impressive haul at the Golden Joystick Awards 2025 and The Game Awards, creative director Guillaume Broche shared that the team initially thought, “it’s not going to be big, it’s going to be cool,” reflecting on the surreal experience of having their heartfelt creation embraced by the gaming community.

With increased attention on the studio and its future projects, fans hope the developers can keep the magic that made Clair Obscur so special alive.
