Classic Pokémon Red & Blue Transformed into a Stunning 3D Voxel Experience

Pokémon remakes usually focus on enhancing visuals, but what if Game Freak decided to revamp the classic pixel art instead? A recent leak from a documentary about Pokémon Diamond and Pearl showcased how effective 3D pixel art can be. A new mod for the original Pokémon games embraces this concept, and the results are nothing short of amazing.

This mod brings a host of new features, including 60 frames per second, widescreen support, ambient occlusion, dynamic shadows, and various camera angles. The battles now occur directly on a 3D map, adding a fresh twist. There’s even an option that mimics an Animal Crossing-style rolling world curvature. Players can choose to experience the games in vibrant color or activate a filter that replicates the classic Game Boy’s green monochrome palette.

The visuals resemble a 3D diorama, where the sprites appear as leaning slabs. According to the mod’s description, “A shadow map casts real shadows on whatever they touch, and an optional tilt-shift effect enhances the miniature model aesthetic.”

Battles are presented from an over-the-shoulder viewpoint, featuring a “slow parallax drift” behind the Pokémon and a “depth-of-field effect that keeps both characters in focus.”

Importantly, this project is not a ROM or an emulator for the Game Boy. The readme clarifies, “A canonical US Pokémon Red or Blue ROM is the only game content input. The ROM is verified, used during import, then released from memory.”

Having received several updates in recent weeks, the project appears to be well-supported. The creators have shared nine minutes of gameplay footage showcasing the early game, where players receive their starter Pokémon in Pallet Town. It only took a few seconds of watching for me to be completely sold on this concept!

While the RPG will still feature turn-based battles, they are expected to unfold in a new and exciting way.
