Classic Pokémon Titles Match This Year’s Sales of Pokémon Pokopia

While there hasn’t been a new mainline Pokémon game this year, 2026 has been a monumental year for the franchise and its community. February marked the 30th anniversary of Pokémon, coinciding with the release of the Dragon Quest Builders-inspired spinoff, Pokémon Pokopia. To celebrate this milestone, two beloved classics, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, originally launched on the Game Boy Advance in 2004, were brought to the Switch.

Recently, Nintendo revealed its financial results for the past fiscal year, shedding light on the impressive sales of these titles shortly after their release. It seems that the love for Pokémon, both old and new, remains strong! Pokopia quickly became one of the best-selling titles on the Switch 2, moving over 4 million units within its first five weeks.

Interestingly, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen matched Pokopia’s sales in a similar timeframe, having launched just a week earlier. These classic ports have also surpassed 4 million copies sold, highlighting the nostalgia that Pokémon fans hold dear.

However, it’s important to note that the sales figures aren’t directly comparable. The original Switch has sold over 155 million units, while the Switch 2 is nearing 20 million, meaning there were fewer potential buyers for Pokopia. Additionally, the classic ports are priced at $19.99, making them more accessible than Pokopia’s $69.99 tag. Regardless, the enduring appeal of classic Pokémon adventures is evident, with over 4 million trainers diving into the remakes this year.

As Pokémon expert Joe Merrick pointed out, the additional sales of FireRed and LeafGreen on the Switch have pushed their total sales to 16 million copies, placing them in the top 10 for Pokémon game sales. With Pokémon Diamond and Pearl sitting at fifth place with 17.67 million copies sold, it’s quite possible that FireRed and LeafGreen could break into the top five soon.

The latest mainline entry, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, has sold 12.79 million copies, with 8.85 million on the original Switch and 3.94 million on Switch 2. Merrick noted that Z-A’s sales are tracking closely with Legends: Arceus, which has reached 15 million copies sold.

In addition to the financial results, Nintendo announced that the price of the Switch 2 will increase to $499.99 later this year. The console launched last June at $449.99, while the now-discontinued Mario Kart World bundle was priced at $499.99.
