CliffyB from Gears of War is developing a new game that will focus solely on PvE gameplay.
Cliff Bleszinski, renowned for his contributions to the Gears of War and Unreal Tournament franchises, as well as LawBreakers, is gearing up to dive back into game development after a significant hiatus. However, don’t expect him to return to the competitive multiplayer scene.
In a recent interview, Bleszinski, also known as CliffyB, reflected on his career and the challenges he faced with his previous studio, Boss Key Productions. He attributed the studio’s struggles to a mix of personal issues, including his ego and alcoholism, a problematic publishing deal, and the choice not to release LawBreakers on Xbox. Now four months sober, he feels a renewed passion for creating games.
“I want to craft characters and worlds that resonate with people, things they’ll want to cosplay or even get tattooed,” he shared. He also mentioned finding inspiration in unexpected places, saying, “I can’t walk into a Home Depot without seeing a full arsenal at every turn. There’s so much more than just chainsaws.”
While details about his next project remain under wraps, Bleszinski has made it clear that it won’t include player-versus-player elements, a departure from his previous work. “Good luck to anyone in that space. I’m more of a fan of PvE these days. Horde mode saved Gears 2, and I believe that space is evergreen because players just want to hop online with friends and shoot some stuff, no frills, no questions asked.”
Given the number of high-profile PvP game failures since LawBreakers, it’s understandable why he’d steer clear of that genre. For now, fans will have to wait and see what this new venture will bring as it develops.
