Cockroaches Will Soon Fear My Rechargeable SwitchBot!
A little robotic switch-flipper has become my trusty ally in the fight against cockroaches. Before I got the SwitchBot Bot Rechargeable, I would tiptoe through the dark every morning, hoping to avoid stepping on one of those pesky bugs as I made my way to the light switch across the room. Now, I’m ready for action before I even enter the room, thanks to the $33.99 SwitchBot Bot Rechargeable, which I can activate from a distance.
This compact gadget attaches with adhesive near a switch or button and uses its tiny robotic arm to physically press or pull it for you. You can automate anything with physical power buttons, from coffee makers and light switches to garage door openers and laundry machines — it turns “dumb” gadgets into smarter ones. If you pair it with a hub, you can control it hands-free using voice assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, even when you’re outside your home.
The capabilities of the SwitchBot Bot Rechargeable are similar to the original model, which is slightly cheaper. However, as its name suggests, this newer version features a USB-C rechargeable battery instead of relying on disposables. While it’s more eco-friendly, the battery life is notably shorter, lasting up to six months on a single charge if you only trigger the switch once a day (compared to up to 600 days with the original). Still, I prefer the rechargeable option; it’s convenient to plug the Bot in when needed rather than worrying about replacing batteries every few months.
Installation can vary in complexity based on how you plan to use it. My straightforward setup required more trial and error than I anticipated. The arm needs to be positioned just right to reach the switch, push it in, and pull back. While it’s still much easier than rewiring a switch or swapping it for a smart one, it’s not quite the set-it-and-forget-it experience I envisioned. You might find installation easy, but be ready for a bit of experimentation to get the perfect fit.
The Bot also comes with a small plastic attachment that sticks directly to your light switch. Once looped around the Bot’s arm, it allows the device to physically turn the switch on with a push and off with a pull. I struggled a bit with this part; it wasn’t immediately clear where the attachment should go, and I initially placed it in the wrong spot. The instructional video hints at the correct placement, but the written instructions are a bit vague, leading to several rounds of repositioning before I finally got it right.
Once everything was set up correctly, I was pleased with the Bot’s performance. Throughout my testing, it stayed securely attached, responding reliably from across my apartment, and never missed a scheduled action. It’s been a relief to walk into a brightly lit kitchen instead of cautiously tiptoeing through the dark. Plus, there’s something oddly satisfying about watching the tiny robotic arm flip a switch.
The SwitchBot Bot Rechargeable may not be the best choice for a home already filled with smart bulbs and plugs. However, most of us have at least one appliance or switch we’d love to automate. This clever, relatively inexpensive solution is worth considering. Installation might require a bit more patience than simply sticking the device where you think it should go, and it is a little bulky. But the automation works flawlessly, and it has been a small yet helpful ally in my ongoing battle against the roaches.
