ConcernedApe: Stardew Valley Console Mod Support Unlikely, But Not Out of the Question

Stardew Valley’s creator, Eric ‘ConcernedApe’ Barone, has not completely dismissed the idea of adding mod support for consoles, but he believes it may not be feasible for several reasons. Even a decade after its initial release, the game boasts a vibrant player community, largely fueled by the extensive modding scene.

Currently, PC players have access to nearly 30,000 mods on Nexus Mods, enhancing the game with new plants, animals, romance options, and various movement mechanics. However, console players are left out of the modding experience, as there’s no way for them to create or use mods.

In response to a recent inquiry about the possibility of outsourcing mod support for consoles, Barone expressed skepticism. He stated, “If it was simple to do, I wouldn’t be opposed. But I don’t think it would be possible, for numerous reasons.”

The challenge lies in the fact that while PC players can modify game code freely, any updates for consoles must be approved by the respective manufacturers. This means that any development tools akin to those in Mario Maker would need to be created and sanctioned by Sony, Xbox, or Nintendo, which is no small task.

Although Barone didn’t elaborate on the “numerous reasons,” a basic understanding of game development sheds light on the complexities involved.

In addition to his work on Stardew Valley, Barone has also contributed $125,000 to an open-source C# framework that powers his beloved farming simulator, along with a commitment to ongoing monthly support.
