Concerns Rise Over Possible Ledger Wallet Tampering Amid Crypto Theft Reports

Users of the Ledger crypto wallet are reporting that their accounts have been compromised, seemingly due to tampered hardware sold by a third-party reseller. In response, Ledger has requested that this reseller halt all sales of its wallets while an investigation is underway. The company has confirmed that “one of the impacted users’ devices contained an unauthorized hardware implant.”

Images and videos shared on social media platforms show a small circuit board placed beneath the wallet’s screen. This implant is said to capture everything displayed, including the seed passphrase during the initial setup. It utilizes an embedded SIM card to transmit this sensitive information back to the attacker, enabling them to drain funds from user accounts.

Reports suggest that the hacker has stolen over $86 million in cryptocurrency from numerous wallets. Importantly, there is no evidence that Ledger’s own systems have been breached or that wallets purchased directly from the company are affected. The problem appears to stem from a supply chain attack, primarily impacting users in Southeast Asia and linked to the reseller. Ledger has issued guidance on how to verify if your wallet has been compromised.
