Counter-Strike Co-Creator Reflects on Departure: “I Have Some Regrets” About Leaving Valve

While it was a hit right from the start, few could have anticipated the financial powerhouse that Counter-Strike would become. Even now, this iconic shooter rakes in millions for its developer each year, significantly boosting the fortunes of some within the company. Minh Le, one of the original creators of Counter-Strike, left the project early on and has since reflected on what might have been.

“I do have some regrets,” he shared in an interview. “Many of the folks I still keep in touch with at the company are doing really well financially.”

Back in the early 2000s, Le and fellow developer Jesse Cliffe were brought on board for an official release of what was originally a popular mod for Half-Life. As Counter-Strike solidified its place in the gaming world, Le sought new challenges but found little that excited him within the company.

“I could see how Counter-Strike had evolved, but it hadn’t really changed in six years,” Le explained. “They offered me a chance to work on Counter-Strike: Source, but the focus was just on upgrading the graphics. I wanted to create something entirely new.”

After what he described as a friendly discussion with Gabe Newell and other executives, they mutually agreed it was best for him to leave. “They told me, ‘You know, Minh, we think you’d thrive better on your own rather than in a corporate setting,'” Le recalled.

Following his departure, he launched Tactical Intervention, which ultimately shut down in 2019. He has since worked on projects like Rust and with Pearl Abyss, the studio behind Black Desert Online. “If I had stayed, I probably could have retired by now. I chose a different, more challenging route,” he reflected.

“But I believe it was a more rewarding journey for my career, my growth as a developer, and as a person,” he added. “I experienced aspects of the gaming industry that I wouldn’t have encountered if I had remained at the company.”
