Counter-Strike co-creator reveals why the classic shooter remains a Steam favorite after 25 years: “Players are drawn in by skin collecting and more.”

Minh “Gooseman” Le, one of the original creators of Counter-Strike, departed from Valve back in 2006. Since then, his perspective on the iconic FPS series and its remarkable longevity in the PC gaming landscape has evolved quite a bit.

The first Half-Life: Counter-Strike hit the scene in 2000, which is a staggering 26 years ago for those keeping track. Despite its age, the latest iteration, Counter-Strike 2, remains the most played game on Steam, consistently leading the charts by a significant margin. An interview in issue #418 highlighted this phenomenon, and Gooseman was quick to downplay his role in the franchise’s massive success.

“I used to think it was the theme – I still think counter-terrorism is a fascinating theme – but I think people play it just to collect skins and stuff,” he remarked.

As someone who doesn’t regularly dive into Counter-Strike, I find it puzzling that it has maintained such a strong presence at the top of the Steam Charts for years. While it’s undeniably a titan in the esports arena, Gooseman noted that this was more of a happy accident.

“Around beta 5, we were approached by a competitive league asking if we could tweak certain aspects to make the game more suitable for competitive play,” he recalled. “I was like, ‘Don’t bother me – I’m too busy trying to make the game. I don’t have time to turn it into an esports title.’ I was somewhat annoyed by their requests. I didn’t focus on making Counter-Strike an esports game.”

Thus, Counter-Strike’s enduring popularity seems to boil down to the allure of microtransactions. While Gooseman likely recognizes there’s more to it, there’s something amusing about him being presented with an easy question, only to dismiss it with a casual remark.

Counter-Strike may not have made the cut for the best PC games list, but it certainly dominates in its own right.
