Following the unfortunate passing of Catherine O’Hara, The Last of Us season 3 showrunner Craig Mazin has confirmed that the talented actor would have reprised her role in the upcoming season.
O’Hara portrayed Gail Lynden in The Last of Us, a therapist whose husband Joel had killed.
“I don’t think it’s a big spoiler to say that she was going to be in our show again, because of course she was,” Mazin shared on the Scriptnotes podcast. “She’s so good. But she was taken from all of us. What’s really upsetting is that I won’t get to see her in other projects. I wanted to see her in more things, because what else was going to happen?”
O’Hara passed away on January 30, 2026, due to an undisclosed illness. In addition to The Last of Us, she was well-known for her roles in Beetlejuice, Home Alone, Schitt’s Creek, and many other films and series throughout her illustrious career.
The Last of Us season 3 will shift its focus to Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby, a storyline hinted at in the season 2 finale. “I think fans are really going to enjoy the new perspective on Abby, gaining more context about her story and exploring the past this season. I’m very excited for fans to see it,” Dever mentioned in January.
However, creator Neil Druckmann will have a reduced role compared to previous seasons. “It was right when we were about to kick off the writers’ room for season 3,” Druckmann explained. “I assessed what was in front of me, what the next season might entail, and with all the various Last of Us projects I’m involved in – not just the show – and with the major game I’m focused on, Intergalactic: The Heretic Profit, our next big IP for Naughty Dog and PlayStation, it felt like I could better fulfill my responsibilities by stepping back to a higher level.”
The Last of Us season 3 currently lacks a release date. In the meantime, stay tuned for all the most exciting new TV shows of the year.
