Create Unique Musical Art with the Browser-Based Spirograph Tool

I have fond memories of playing with a Spirograph as a kid, completely captivated by its mesmerizing geometric designs. Pairing that nostalgia with my love for generative music composition is a match made in heaven. Enter Musical Spirograph, a simple yet addictive concept that brings these two worlds together in your browser.

In this experience, a set of points zips around the screen based on mathematical equations, creating stunning hypotrochoids and epitrochoids. As these points move through a series of concentric rings, they trigger specific musical notes.

While that alone is engaging, the customization options really elevate the experience. You can choose from six different virtual rotors, draw with up to three arms at once, and tweak various parameters to modify the patterns. There are also six scale options available, or you can fully customize the notes, along with six synth presets to choose from. Additionally, you can adjust the quantization and BPM, or even expand the number of rings to cover two octaves.

Admittedly, the sound engine has its flaws, often leading to clipping and artifacts. I also wish there was a way to output MIDI to control other instruments. Still, it’s an absolute blast to dive into and lose track of time.
