Creative Assembly Unveils Total War: Warhammer 40K, Set in a Grimdark Universe
The latest installment in the Total War franchise is diving into a dark and gritty universe. Total War: Warhammer 40,000 was officially revealed during The Game Awards on December 11, with actor and Warhammer 40K enthusiast David Harbour announcing the new strategy title from Creative Assembly. He shared his passion for the franchise and revealed that he will be part of the game. The debut trailer showcased epic battles between Ultramarines and Orkish hordes, accompanied by a voiceover that highlighted the dire stakes of a universe engulfed in conflict, where humanity teeters on the edge of annihilation. While primarily cinematic, the trailer also offered a glimpse of early gameplay, illustrating how the Total War series will approach combat with its sci-fi factions and interstellar strategy.
In a notable move for complex strategy games, Total War: Warhammer 40K will be available on both consoles and PC. The game’s Steam page indicates that players can choose from four factions: Space Marines, Orks, Aeldari, and Astra Militarum. Gamers will have the opportunity to create custom armies, select colors, and equip their troops with tactical abilities, traits, and wargear. The galactic scale of the game is emphasized, with Creative Assembly stating that players can bombard planets from orbit or even obliterate them entirely using devastating world-ending weapons.
The Warhammer 40,000 franchise has been thriving recently, with the highly praised Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 launching in 2024 to both critical and commercial success. Additionally, a sequel to the RPG Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, titled Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy, is currently in development for PC and consoles. A retro shooter set in the 40K universe, Boltgun, is also set to receive a sequel next year.
