Creature Commandos Season 2: What to Expect from James Gunn’s DC Series Return

Creature Commandos season 2 is on the horizon, bringing back our favorite super-monsters for more thrilling escapades. DC’s James Gunn mentioned in early 2026 that the new episodes are still “in production,” so we might have to wait a bit longer to see what’s next. However, we’ve got some exciting details to share.

This R-rated animated series kicked off DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters before the arrival of Superman and has garnered praise from both critics and fans, leading to a swift renewal for a second season. With Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. appearing in both the first DCU movie and Peacemaker season 2, Creature Commandos is set to expand its role within the franchise. In the first season, Amanda Waller (voiced by Viola Davis) managed this unexpectedly endearing team on perilous black ops missions, but what adventures await them in the next chapter?

Here’s everything we know about the release date, plot, cast, and more for Creature Commandos season 2. From the Bride of Frankenstein to an anthropomorphic weasel and an amphibious doctor, we’re eager to see the gang back together.

The first episode of Creature Commandos premiered on Max on December 4, following its announcement about 11 months earlier in January 2023. Season 2 was confirmed on December 23, 2024. Given the lengthy development process for animated series, we might be looking at a two to three-year wait for the new season.

Writing for the show began early, and in February 2025, writer Dean Lorey shared that DC has fast-tracked the project. “It’s still early days, but we are actively working on breaking the season and starting to figure that out. So it’s definitely moving forward,” he stated. “They put it on a fast track, and they seem to mean it. So, yeah, we’re in it.”

Looking at the announced projects for the first phase of Gunn and Safran’s DCU, titled DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, we know that Supergirl and the Lanterns TV series are set for a 2026 release. This suggests that Creature Commandos season 2 could arrive in 2027.

On January 12, 2026, Gunn responded on Threads to a question about the new episodes, saying, “When we’re done animating the new season which is in production now.”

The first season concluded with the Bride taking charge of a new team of monsters, including King Shark (a familiar face from The Suicide Squad). The team also features Doctor Phosphorous, Weasel, and two new monsters. It’s likely that this new squad will embark on a fresh mission, with the Bride leading instead of Rick Flag Sr. Rick is set to appear in both Superman and Peacemaker season 2, and he remains unaware that Amanda Waller ordered Peacemaker to eliminate Rick Flag Jr. This storyline could carry over into Creature Commandos season 2, but we’ll have to wait and see.

When asked about his hopes for season 2, star Frank Grillo expressed a desire to see the team evolve. “I’d like to see how they develop as a team because it takes the whole season for them to be a symbiotic kind of group and just see where it goes. Because it starts with me meeting them and kind of going like, what am I doing? What are these things? And then we become a family.”

After transitioning to live action with the same character in Superman, Grillo is also set to appear in Peacemaker season 2. In an October 2025 interview, Gunn hinted at the possibility of seeing other Creature Commandos in live action projects, saying, “The answer to that question… is yes, but not necessarily when you think you’re going to see him. So not necessarily in Peacemaker season 2.”

Season 1 saw its share of character deaths, but the finale gives us a good idea of who might return. Two characters’ fates are uncertain: Clayface, known for being notoriously hard to kill, and Eric Frankenstein, who is already somewhat dead. We also see a new, enhanced version of GI Robot in the finale, despite his earlier demise in the season. Below, we’ve compiled a list of characters likely to return for season 2.

Creature Commandos is currently available for streaming in its entirety on Max.
