In Crime 101, the narrative revolves around three main characters: Chris Hemsworth’s jewelry thief Mike, Mark Ruffalo’s LAPD detective Lou, and Halle Berry’s insurance broker Sharon. Their lives take a dramatic turn with the introduction of Ormon, portrayed by Barry Keoghan, which adds an exhilarating twist to the film.

Director Bart Layton, who previously collaborated with Keoghan on the 2018 docudrama American Animals, returns to the director’s chair for this project, having crafted a role specifically for Keoghan. “We have a long relationship, and I wrote that character for him, knowing that he would do it,” Layton shares.

Keoghan embodies Ormon, a volatile and dangerous young thief brought in to replace Mike when his handler suspects he’s losing his edge. Ormon’s unpredictable nature threatens to disrupt everything for Mike, Lou, and Sharon.

“We aimed to keep things organic and not overthink it,” Layton explains. “He’s such an instinctive and natural actor that I try to involve him at the last minute. We discuss the character’s backstory and his origins. Barry has grown up in a tough environment and understands kids like the character he portrays, who lack emotional support or adult guidance. He brings details to the role that I wouldn’t have considered, drawing from his own experiences, and I provide a framework for him to feel free in his performance. He possesses a rare blend of danger and vulnerability, which is incredibly magnetic.”

Hemsworth echoes Layton’s sentiments about Keoghan’s performance. “[He] brings electricity to the set and leaves nothing behind; he gives it his all,” the actor remarks. “His wild, unpredictable nature is both intimidating and magnetic. [He’s an] incredible performer.”
