Crimson Desert Developer Discusses Discrepancy Between Mixed Reviews and 7 Million Sales

Crimson Desert hit the scene with a mixed bag of reviews. While critics lauded its expansive open world and engaging combat, they found the storyline lacking and noted that many connections felt weak or entirely absent. In contrast, player reception was overwhelmingly positive, propelling the game to the top of the Steam charts as a wave of new fans emerged. Lybee Park, CEO of Pearl Abyss Europe, recently addressed the disparity between these two perspectives.

“I think both sides have valid points, especially the critics,” she remarked in an interview. “They were working with a build that wasn’t the same as the final version of the game.”

It’s becoming more common for major titles to launch with ongoing updates, meaning developers are still implementing significant changes and optimizations right up until release. Although reviewers had ample time with Crimson Desert—some logging over 100 hours—they were experiencing a version that differed from what players encountered on launch day.

“Critics played a build that was not the same as the launch game,” Park explained. “They also had limited time. Typically, reviewers focus on the main storyline, but our game’s unique charm is woven throughout the world. There are many hidden details that I’m not sure critics had the opportunity to fully explore during their review period.”

Crimson Desert received a day-one patch and a major update within its first week, which included significant changes to various systems, such as inventory limits that had frustrated many reviewers. By the end of its first month, the game had evolved considerably from the version that some critics had spent so much time with.

This helps clarify the gap between its 77 Metacritic score and the impressive 7 million sales it achieved, though it’s worth noting that not everyone is a fan of every aspect of the game, and that’s perfectly okay. Just as box-office numbers don’t define a movie’s quality or artistic value, the same holds true in gaming. For instance, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 was one of last year’s top sellers despite receiving even harsher reviews.

Crimson Desert is still evolving, with its new “Charting the Unknown” DLC set to launch on October 29, following months of significant updates to the vast game world.
