Crimson Desert DLC’s quirky debut trailer explores exciting new horizons for the RPG.

Crimson Desert has been on a continuous update spree since its launch, and there’s even more excitement on the horizon. At Sony’s latest State of Play showcase, Pearl Abyss unveiled the first major expansion for Crimson Desert, titled Charting the Unknown. True to the spirit of the base game, this expansion promises a wild blend of genres and experiences.

“Reclaim power and reach beyond—into the unknown,” the DLC’s synopsis teases. “The story of Pywel continues in Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown as Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane embark on a quest to uncover their destinies and shape their futures. However, as chaos erupts around them, each must battle to carve their own path through the challenges that lie ahead. Join them on a new adventure and explore the fresh possibilities that await across Pywel.”

The trailer kicks off with a glimpse of a “hidden land” beyond the crimson desert, a place where many have perished, and where witches have begun to sense “whispers of darkness steadily growing stronger.” It then abruptly shifts to a bustling city where Kliff appears to build a house and rearrange furniture. In a surprising twist, Kliff kneels to propose to a witch, takes on a pirate persona, rides a dragon, and plunges into the ocean donning scuba gear and a jetpack. We catch sight of a massive metal ship, and a character runs across the water like an anime hero. The expansion features various animal-themed mechs, including a dragon, a squid, and a crab that fires laser beams. The DLC is set to launch on October 15, with early 20th-century scuba diving gear available as a pre-order bonus.

If there’s a loose theme tying together this eclectic mix, it seems to revolve around a rift in time and space, which could explain the odd combination of steampunk elements, galleons, medieval towns, and robots. Or perhaps it’s just Crimson Desert embracing its quirky nature. We’ll find out for certain next month.

This expansion also promises enhancements to its previously criticized storyline.
