Critical Role Revolutionizes D&D Level-Up Mechanics
Brennan Lee Mulligan is known for his innovative approach to the game, and as the Dungeon Master for Campaign 4 of Critical Role, he’s once again introduced fresh house rules that keep the gameplay dynamic and engaging. This time, he’s revamped the leveling-up process, adding a new layer of excitement.
In a recent YouTube video, Mulligan, along with the Soldiers Table crew—Travis Willingham, Laura Bailey, Whitney Moore, Robbie Daymond, and Sam Riegel—navigated the transition from level 3 to level 4. This is a pivotal moment for Dungeon & Dragons players, as it’s when they can choose between gaining a new feat or improving their ability scores. Feats can lead to powerful character builds, while ability score enhancements are crucial for a character’s core capabilities.
Instead of the usual immediate level-up, Mulligan has introduced a twist: players can now decide when to level up in future episodes, allowing for a more narratively satisfying moment for their characters to gain new powers and health—even during combat. As Mulligan puts it, “You have earned your level-up; it’s just you taking a narratively satisfying moment to do it.”
This approach significantly deviates from the traditional method where leveling up typically occurs between sessions. The standard practice allows players to discuss their character progression with the DM, ensuring they’re ready to dive into the next session. However, as many DMs know, players often face indecision when confronted with the myriad options D&D offers, sometimes delaying choices like new spells until the last minute.
Mulligan’s method is intriguing because it empowers players to create “epic” moments filled with tension and excitement, while also enhancing the narrative flow. Fans can look forward to scenes where heroes, seemingly on the brink of defeat, rise again with renewed strength and determination.
Viewers will also enjoy the suspense of not knowing what choices players will make. After rolling for hit points, Mulligan had each player outline their potential options for feats, ability score improvements, and spells. When the moment arrives, players will have to make their selections based on the unfolding story rather than purely on optimization.
For instance, Travis is torn between choosing Bless or Detect Magic for Teor’s next spell. Each option serves a different purpose: Bless boosts the party in combat, while Detect Magic reveals hidden magical objects and effects. Mulligan noted, “At some point, Teor will have to choose whether he wishes for the sight to see the unseen and detect magic, or the ability to bless and protect his friends and allies, and they say very different things about how the character is growing.”
This clever approach not only tackles the common issue of player indecision but also transforms it into a meaningful part of character development and the overarching campaign narrative.
The next episode of Campaign Four is scheduled to air on Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. PT on Twitch and YouTube, with a VOD available on the streaming app.
