Cyberpunk 2077 is launching an official trading card game featuring Edgerunners’ Lucy.
CD Projekt Red and Weird Co. have unveiled an official trading card game set in the Cyberpunk universe, aptly named Cyberpunk TCG. The announcement came with an exciting trailer that dropped on December 9, perfectly timed for the five-year anniversary of Cyberpunk 2077.
While specific gameplay mechanics are still under wraps, it appears that each deck will feature a central Legend tasked with assembling a crew of Units, enhanced by Gear cards. Players will earn Street Cred and complete Gigs as they progress.
“I’m thrilled for players to experience how we’ve translated Cyberpunk themes, like taking on gigs and crew building, into a trading card game format,” said Luohan Wei, co-founder of Weird Co. “It stays true to the essence of Cyberpunk while bringing something fresh to the TCG scene; it’s a fantastic blend.”
The trailer kicks off with a dynamic showcase of Night City from Cyberpunk 2077, followed by a reveal of various cards, interspersed with clips from the game.
Familiar faces from Cyberpunk 2077 make an appearance, including Psycho Squad, Offduty Malfini, and Swordwise Huscle, each boasting unique abilities that interact with other cards. Gear cards like Mantis Blades, Kiroshi Optics, and Mandibular Upgrade also feature prominently.
Legends highlighted in the trailer include Jackie Welles, Mama’s Favorite, and Judy Alvarez, Nothing to Doubt. Additionally, we catch glimpses of Saburo Arasaka, Stubborn Patriarch; V, Corporate Exile; and Goro Takemura, Hands Unclean.
A standout moment in the trailer shows the combination of V, Corporate Exile and the Dying Light gear card for V’s pistol, followed by a clip of V utilizing Dying Light in 2077.
It’s clear that Cyberpunk TCG is deeply rooted in the aesthetics and characters of Cyberpunk 2077. The trailer concludes with an invitation for players to sign up for the game’s launch page, where they can snag a free Lucyna Kushinada card. Lucy is the protagonist from the 2022 Netflix animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, hinting that the TCG may explore connections to the comics from Dark Horse or delve into the rich lore of the original tabletop RPG.
“CD Projekt Red has a strong background in trading card games, especially with their experience in Gwent, making them an ideal partner for this project,” Luohan Wei shared. “We’re dedicated to fostering the human connections that are vital in TCG communities, which means creating a handcrafted product without AI and prioritizing local communities and game stores in our strategy.”
Weird Co. was founded earlier this year by Elliot Cook and Luohan Wei, who connected through mutual friend and mentor Bill Mooney. They’ve assembled a talented team of designers from Marvel Snap, Duel Masters, and Universus to collaborate closely with CD Projekt Red on this new venture.
“CD Projekt Red shares our vision, and recognizing that synergy made this partnership a natural fit,” Cook noted. “Our primary focus is to create a game that embodies and celebrates every aspect of Cyberpunk — its past and its future. That’s our guiding principle.”
Patrick Mills, CDPR’s Franchise Content Strategy Lead, confirmed that the initial release of Cyberpunk TCG will center on Cyberpunk 2077.
“We’ve worked hand-in-hand with Weird Co. to ensure that the artwork and flavor of each card authentically reflect the characters they represent, capturing their personalities and memorable moments that players will instantly recognize,” Mills explained. “Given the complexity of our characters, we aimed to showcase their many facets across multiple cards, allowing players to collect a variety of unique character variants, including V, Johnny, Panam, Judy, Adam Smasher, and more.”
Wake up, samurai; it’s time to build your deck.
