Dan Trachtenberg has confirmed that his first-look deal with Paramount “does not mean” he will stop making Predator films.
In a recent interview, the director shared that he is “simultaneously figuring out all of the next steps” for the sci-fi franchise while working with Paramount.
“I’m in a similar position to when Prey was released, thinking, ‘What do I do next?'” Trachtenberg explained. “I got really excited about a Predator protagonist and an animated film with multiple timelines, and they just happened to align. So right now, I’m thinking, ‘Oh my God, there are so many exciting possibilities for Predator.'”
Last year, both Predator: Badlands and Predator: Killer of Killers were released, the latter being a critically acclaimed animated anthology that showcased humanity’s fiercest warriors—a Viking raider, a Japanese ninja, and a World War II pilot—battling the iconic extraterrestrials across different historical eras.
The former features Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi and Elle Fanning, following Dek, a Yautja “runt,” as he seeks to defeat a Kalisk, the galaxy’s most formidable enemy, and regain his clan’s respect. During his quest, he encounters Thia, a legless bot with a bubbly personality that initially annoys him. However, they soon become unexpected allies, defying the Yautja Codex—which states the species is “friend to none”—as they embark on Dek’s mission together.
“Now I have this deal at Paramount, and I’m thrilled, as are they, to create some of the original films I’ve always envisioned,” Trachtenberg said, who previously collaborated with the studio on the acclaimed sequel 10 Cloverfield Lane. “Of course, they have some fantastic IP as well. Timing may influence certain aspects, but both projects are close to my heart… Anything is possible.”
In June 2025, Trachtenberg admitted to a magazine that he “sort of rushed” Killer of Killers and Badlands because he was “so eager to get to the third project.” It seems he already has some ideas for the next chapter in this blood-soaked saga…
