Danganronpa Creator Teases New Game That’s Not a Danganronpa 2 Remake, But Evokes Nostalgia

Kazutaka Kodaka’s upcoming Danganronpa 2×2 is definitely not a remake of the beloved 2012 title Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, as the visual novel mastermind clarifies.

Kodaka, the visionary behind both Danganronpa and the massive 2025 strategy RPG The Hundred Line, explains that Danganronpa 2×2 is “a game that is not a remake of Danganronpa 2, but rather uses the characters in a new story and a new scenario in a new setting.”

While both Danganronpa 2 and Danganronpa 2×2 feature you as a student on a tropical adventure in the vibrant Jabberwock Island, the Steam pages for both visual novels showcase the same screenshot—though the newer one boasts sharper graphics and a more vivid color palette. And yes, both games involve the deceptively cute teddy bear Monokuma thrusting you into a deadly game of survival. But rest assured, it won’t be the same exact deadly game.

“We hope fans will enjoy those characters in this new, updated version,” Kodaka reiterates about Danganronpa 2×2, stressing that it is “not a remake, but rather a retelling of that story” from Danganronpa 2.

Kodaka also shares that revisiting this unique murder mystery series has been “nostalgic.” He reflects, “To be able to work with the characters from 10 years ago and to bring them back into a new setting is definitely a nostalgic feeling. It brings back memories when I’m able to continue working on it.”

You can call it a comeback if you like, but just don’t label it a remake.

The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy may not be exactly like Persona XCOM, but it’s perfectly suited for enjoying on the Steam Deck.
