DC Comics Leader Acknowledges Manga’s Edge Over American Comics: “Their Success Sets a Benchmark for Us”
Jim Lee, the head of DC Comics, has shared his thoughts on the competitive edge that manga and anime hold over American comics, expressing his appreciation for the challenge they present.
“The narratives found in Japanese manga and anime are incredibly impactful,” Lee remarked in an interview. “I often ponder what Western comics lack and why they struggle to capture the same essence. Manga seems to have an ‘advantage’ since American comics primarily focus on superheroes, which dominate sales and readership.”
Since 2023, Lee has served as the president, publisher, and chief creative officer at DC Comics, having begun his career as an artist for Marvel Comics, where his style contributed to the designs for X-Men: The Animated Series.
“In Japan, manga is more akin to ‘literature,’ accessible to everyone, and it encompasses more than just superhero tales. There’s a vast array of genres, including cooking and sports stories. This diversity allows for a broader range of storytelling,” he added. “I’m thrilled that manga has achieved such success, as it sets a ‘goal’ for us to strive toward. The manga market is larger than ours, prompting the question, ‘What can we learn from this?'”
The popularity of manga and anime continues to grow worldwide, including in Western markets. Recently, a major streaming service teamed up with MAPPA, the studio behind Jujutsu Kaisen, to collaborate on new projects with a global outlook, covering everything from story development to merchandise.
