DC Shifts Focus to Superman’s Father as the Star of New Series
Jor-El, Superman’s father, is often portrayed as a scientist, and sometimes he even suggests his son take over the world with a harem. However, in an exciting new Elseworlds comic series, DC is reimagining Jor-El as a fresh version of the Man of Steel in *Superman: Father of Tomorrow*.
Set outside the main DC universe, this series follows an adult Jor-El who crash-lands in Kansas after Krypton’s destruction. It essentially reworks Superman’s classic origin story, placing the focus on his father as he navigates life on Earth.
“As he adapts to his new surroundings, Jor-El realizes he can contribute to his new home not just with his powers, but also with his intellect. This is the tale of a Man of Steel and Science—and the world he strives to protect,” the official description states.
*Superman: Father of Tomorrow* is set to debut on May 27, crafted by writer Kenny Porter and artist Danny Earls.
In the spirit of DC’s Black Label, Elseworlds stories are not bound by official canon, allowing creators to take beloved characters in unexpected and imaginative directions. For instance, Batman once pursued Jack the Ripper in the 1989 one-shot *Gotham by Gaslight*. This imprint has seen sporadic releases over the years and is making a significant comeback in 2024 with new titles like *Gotham by Gaslight: The Kryptonian Age* and *Green Lantern: Dark*.
*Father of Tomorrow* isn’t the only Elseworlds title on the horizon. *Supergirl: Survive*, written by Ethan S. Parker and Griffin Sheridan with art by Rod Reis, is set to release on June 3. This story features a teenage Kara escaping a General Zod-controlled Krypton with her baby cousin, Kal, and is described as a “tale of two refugees bound by blood, trauma, and hope.”
The main cover for *Supergirl: Survive* is illustrated by Rod Reis, with variant covers by Taurin Clarke and Guillem March. Preview pages showcase Kara and Kal making their escape from Krypton.
Lastly, *Dark Knights of Steel 2* is on the way, with writer Tom Taylor returning to his swords-and-sorcery reimagining of DC’s heroes, accompanied by artist Otto Schmidt. While plot details remain under wraps, this installment is set to launch on July 15, and the main cover is by Yasmine Putri.
