DC Studios Head Provides Official Update on Lanterns Season 2
Lanterns season 1 wrapped up earlier this month, leaving Sunday nights wide open for NFL action. The finale tied up the storyline nicely but still left fans with some lingering questions—and a strong desire to see the beloved John Stewart take on the Green Lantern mantle! While viewers are eager for a second season, DC Studios hasn’t given it the green light yet. In a recent interview, co-CEO Peter Safran shed some light on the situation.
When asked about the future of Lanterns during a discussion promoting the upcoming Clayface project, Safran said, “We’ll see what happens with Lanterns season 2. If the HBO and DC teams, along with executive producer Chris Mundy, feel we’ve created something that lives up to the beloved first season, I wouldn’t be surprised to see more.”
However, when pressed about whether season 2 has been officially approved, Safran was straightforward: “No.”
The first season concluded with John Stewart deciding to be an independent Green Lantern, protecting Earth without the oversight of the Guardians of the Universe. Fans can look forward to seeing him fully embrace his superhero role in next year’s Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. Safran explained the choice to debut Stewart on TV rather than in a film: “The episodic format is crucial to our overall strategy. It allows us to tell stories that need more depth than a feature film can provide, and it’s a fantastic way to introduce characters before they transition to the big screen.”
Looking ahead, the next DC Universe TV project is set to be The People v. Gorilla Grodd, a true crime-style docuseries featuring Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, slated for 2027. As for what comes after that, Safran mentioned that several projects are in contention, but nothing has been finalized for either film or television. “We have a solid lineup of animation projects moving forward, but on the live-action side, it’s still a bit up in the air,” he noted.
Safran also shared details about the leads for the upcoming Mister Miracle show and revealed that Scott Snyder is currently working on scripts for an Absolute Batman animated series. On the film front, he mentioned that James Gunn has yet to decide on his next directorial project.
The new Green Lantern’s power comes with a terrible drawback.
