Deltarune Achieves Significant Milestones Following the Launch of Chapter 5
While it might slip your mind during those lengthy waits between chapters, Deltarune is definitely making waves in the gaming world. When Chapter 5 dropped on June 24, it shattered records by more than doubling the game’s previous peak for concurrent players, reaching an impressive 291,816 active users on Steam alone (it’s also playable on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5).
To put that into perspective, Deltarune would rank among the top five on the Steam charts, which are typically filled with live-service titles and idle clickers where players grind for marketplace items.
In addition to this, the game has achieved another significant milestone: Toby Fox has made his debut on a song-based Billboard ranking. Tracks “Flower Man” and “Cutie Mew Mew Magic” secured the 13th and 18th spots on the Hot Dance/Electronic charts. While the score for Chapters 3 and 4 previously made it onto Billboard’s Soundtracks album chart, this marks the first time Fox’s individual songs have gained enough traction to rank alongside artists like Tame Impala and Danny. Kudos to Toby and Camellia! Overall, the score reached No. 3 on the Soundtracks chart and No. 5 on the Top Dance/Electronic Albums.
Both Undertale and Deltarune have produced countless memorable tracks, with “Megalovania” even being performed in front of the Pope. Deltarune: Chapter 5 has sparked another cultural moment online, largely due to its catchy new themes. “Flower Man” serves as the main theme for Flowery, a flower reincarnated as an anime boy who transforms from a despicable foe to a beloved ally through the power of friendship. One of his standout traits is his quirky audio quips that often don’t align with his text dialogue (“Glue!”).
Adding to the intrigue, “Flower Man” features lyrics that aren’t sung in-game, inspiring a wave of fan covers.
On the other hand, “Cutie Mew Mew Magic” is the theme for the chapter’s secret boss and includes a surprising (and amusing) cameo from the iconic Hatsune Miku. The Vocaloid twist on the track has led to covers featuring other virtual singers, like Kasane Teto.
The chapter has also generated a plethora of memes, thanks to the new characters—Flowery’s allies, who are technically antagonists—who have resonated with fans, including the stab-happy murderchild Aqua and her scholarly pseudo-sibling Seth.
Flowery has inspired numerous fan animations showcasing his adventures, while Miku’s cameo has been parodied endlessly. There are even mods for fighting games that allow players to take control of some of these characters. The game’s nightmarish “weird” route (essentially the bad ending) continues to intrigue players and fuel wild theories.
If there’s one takeaway, it’s that nothing can rival the allure of anime.
After the release of Chapter 5, Toby Fox has hinted that the wait for future chapters won’t be as long.
