Deltarune Creator Hints at Release Window for Chapter 6

The fifth chapter of Deltarune, the indie RPG crafted by Toby Fox, has finally arrived, bringing players closer to the epic conclusion of this episodic adventure that kicked off in 2018. But the team isn’t slowing down; in a recent update on the game’s Steam FAQ, Fox announced that work has already started on Chapter 6 and shared some insights on its anticipated release.

Deltarune Chapter 5: Festival Day launched on June 24 as a free update for all players who own the base game. Alongside this new chapter, the developer took the opportunity to address some common questions from fans. One of the key points was whether Chapter 5 signifies the end of Deltarune’s development. The answer? A resounding “No!” The story will continue, with more chapters being added for free over time.

As for the release timeline for Chapter 6, Fox mentioned, “We are aiming for a 2027 release!” He also noted that fans can expect periodic updates on the game’s development progress.

The episodic format of Deltarune has sparked plenty of speculation among fans throughout its development. The chapter select screen indicates there will be seven chapters in total. If that holds true, only two more chapters remain before players can finally experience the long-awaited conclusion. This finale has been hinted at, with the game’s Steam page teasing, “only 1 ending…?” Unlike Fox’s previous title, Undertale, which featured multiple endings based on player choices, Deltarune seems to be taking a different approach. However, some fans remain skeptical about the chapter count, pointing to unused files and assets that suggest the possibility of eighth, ninth, and even tenth chapters.

The gaps between Deltarune chapters have sometimes felt lengthy. After the first chapter launched in 2018, Chapter 2 didn’t arrive until 2021, followed by a simultaneous release of Chapters 3 and 4 in 2025. With the recent debut of Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 expected next year (let’s hope for no delays), it appears that development is finally on a more consistent track. If everything goes smoothly, we could see the seventh and final chapter of Deltarune released in 2028, a full decade after the game first began. That is, of course, assuming there are indeed only seven chapters.

Deltarune is available on Mac, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC. The indie RPG has already made a significant impact, becoming the most successful game on the Switch 2 eShop to date.
