Deltarune Fan Event’s Takoyaki Causes Food Poisoning Outbreak Among Attendees

What do Toby Fox’s episodic RPG Deltarune and events like Fyre Festival, DashCon, and the Glasgow Willy’s Chocolate Experience have in common? If you haven’t been following the latest buzz on social media, you’re about to find out.

Recently, a Toronto event organizer named Sugar Packet hosted an unofficial Deltarune Fan Cafe. For $15, attendees could enjoy 50 minutes of themed food, merchandise, a photo booth, and a raffle. There was also a free segment featuring a more extensive artist alley and a live playthrough of the newly released Chapter 5, which inspired the event’s theme and menu.

However, the event was marred by significant issues, the most alarming being a particular menu item. The cafe offered takoyaki, likely inspired by a vendor from Chapter 5’s festival. Unfortunately, the organizers reported that the takoyaki was improperly stored, left to thaw in a cooler, and allegedly taken out after the ice melted, resulting in multiple cases of food poisoning that sent several attendees to urgent care or the hospital. To top it off, the dish didn’t look very appealing:

In Chapter 5 of Deltarune, when party member Susie tries the in-game takoyaki, she remarks that it tastes like “raw onion.” At least the organizers showed some dedication to the source material?

Aside from the unappetizing takoyaki, attendees voiced concerns about overcrowding, issues with merchandise pre-orders, and unexpected price changes. The venue itself was a sparsely decorated college building:

Even the kitchen was just a regular classroom:

finding out there was a horrifically organised deltarune cafe in toronto that took place in a college office building, was managed by two club presidents and had a canteen as the kitchen is the craziest thing to wake up to (this is allegedly what the kitchen looked like)pic.twitter.com/FBiQrVOEYG

Days after the event, the organizers issued apologies through four separate posts, offered refunds, and announced plans to cover any hospital bills related to the takoyaki incident. They also provided information on reporting food safety violations and announced a 10-month hiatus, urging attendees not to harass volunteers, with two organizers taking full responsibility.

“The Deltarune cafe was a failure,” the organizers stated on social media. At least Sugar Packet is owning up to their mistakes. Here’s hoping everyone recovers fully.
