Destiny 2 Modder Revives Long-Lost Content After Six Years

In 2020, Bungie made the controversial decision to vault a significant amount of Destiny 2 content, rendering it unplayable. This included key story missions and other elements that players had invested in. While the move was justified for technical reasons, it left many in the community feeling frustrated, and the game’s reputation took a hit. However, there’s a glimmer of hope as someone is working to bring back some of that old content, albeit with certain limitations.

Recently, a surge of gameplay videos has emerged on platforms like Twitter, Reddit, and YouTube, showcasing players exploring previously vaulted areas of Destiny 2. This isn’t a result of AI or clever tricks; it’s made possible by a fan-developed tool currently in the works that will eventually allow players to access these once-inaccessible locations, such as the Leviathan raid map.

The tool, known as the Destiny 2 Shadowkeep Singleplayer Exploration Mode, is being crafted by a developer named Stanuwu, who has made notable strides in the mod’s development over the past few weeks. It utilizes the last version of Destiny 2 released before Bungie began its content vaulting process.

While this tool is exciting, don’t expect to relive the entire original campaign or past DLC expansions. Stanuwu has clarified on the mod’s GitHub page that the unvaulted areas will lack mechanics and enemies. The focus is on allowing players to wander through the nostalgic environments of Destiny 2 without any gameplay elements. Given that Destiny 2 is no longer receiving major updates, this mod may be the only opportunity for fans to revisit some of these classic maps.

One of the standout comments on a video showcasing the beloved Leviathan map simply read: “I’m going to cry bro.”
