Destiny 2 Players Celebrate After Months of Crashes: “It Finally Worked!”
The initial plan was to phase out Destiny 2 in June, but shortly after, mass layoffs hit, affecting most of the team behind Bungie’s sci-fi MMO. Understandably, fans were furious. They rallied together, signing petitions, threatening boycotts, and flooding chats during summer gaming showcases, demanding that Sony approve Destiny 3. While Sony hasn’t made that move yet, Bungie has done a complete turnaround on its stance about new content for Destiny 2, and fans are celebrating like it’s the end of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
The upcoming content for Destiny 2 isn’t entirely new; it consists of elements that were previously removed and vaulted years ago. However, it will need to be revamped to align with the current standards and gameplay mechanics of the loot shooter. If you had told the community back in May that Destiny 2 would be reversing its vaulting decision—one of the most controversial moves in the game’s nearly decade-long history—they would have seen it as a significant commitment to fresh content.
And it is indeed a big deal. Bungie hasn’t revealed a timeline for when this content will start rolling out, but the studio’s vibe suggests it won’t be happening for several months. Still, that hasn’t stopped fans from celebrating their perceived victory:
Are we back ????
My god he’s done it again
“Destiny is foundational to our future…. you’re damn right it is.”
Bungie has a LONG road ahead of them. The best thing the Destiny community can do now is be patient.
????We did it.
This may be the best possible outcome! Bungie has confirmed they will be bringing back the vaulted content, “beginning the work of bringing vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids back into the game, where they will be available to all D2 players.”
Some fans remain skeptical about Bungie’s ability to deliver, especially after the recent layoffs of many key team members who would have been ideal for leading this new initiative. Questions are already arising about whether any of those laid off will be brought back due to this announcement, and if not, how Bungie plans to fulfill such an ambitious promise.
On the flip side, some fans are overly optimistic, even speculating about a new Destiny game. Bungie did confirm that it will be working on “new stories” within the Destiny universe, but didn’t provide any specifics on what that might entail. This hasn’t stopped some from digging into the studio’s outdated LinkedIn page to assert that Destiny 3 is definitely in the works. However, the studio’s community manager clarified that the old language about focusing on the next highly-anticipated release was outdated and not indicative of any current plans.
For now, Destiny 2 fans are free to indulge in their wildest dreams for the franchise’s future. Whether any of these dreams will be feasible or profitable enough to ensure Bungie’s sustainability remains to be seen. That’s a question for another day.
