Deus Ex Studio Leader Departs After Nearly Two Decades, Resulting in 124 Job Cuts

Eidos Montréal, a studio under Embracer, is letting go of 124 employees in its latest round of layoffs, marking a significant shift for the team behind the Deus Ex series. David Anfossi, the studio head and a veteran with 19 years of experience, is also stepping down as part of these changes.

The studio announced, “The workforce reduction affecting 124 employees is due to evolving project needs and impacts across production and support teams. Today is a challenging day for our studio, highlighting the necessity to adapt and focus our efforts where Eidos Montréal can be most effective.”

They added, “We are sincerely thankful to the team members affected; this decision does not reflect their talent, dedication, or performance. Our priority is to support those impacted with care and respect while ensuring continuity for the remaining teams.”

In addition to Anfossi’s departure, the studio is in the process of establishing a transition plan, with updates on new leadership expected soon. However, the absence of an announced successor raises questions about whether this plan was in place prior to the layoffs. This follows a previous round of cuts last December and an earlier layoff of 75 employees in March 2025.

Reports earlier this year indicated that Eidos was developing a new AAA open-world action-adventure game since 2019, which faced challenges in recouping its budget. Over the years, several other projects have been shelved, including ideas for another Deus Ex sequel. Eidos Montréal is known for releasing Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy in 2021 and has recently been collaborating with Xbox on Grounded 2 and Fable.
