Developer assures that Xbox’s upcoming RPG will deliver a standout experience.
Xbox has a lot at stake with Fable. This RPG from Playground Games aims to breathe new life into a cherished franchise that has been inactive for a decade, though its development has been marked by several delays. This comes during a challenging time for Xbox, with layoffs, studio closures, and project cancellations. Fable is scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027, and the director is confident that the wait will be worthwhile.
In a recent interview, director Ralph Fulton emphasized the team’s dedication to crafting a story with a satisfying climax, assuring fans that they will “stick the landing.” He acknowledged that while industry statistics suggest only a small percentage of players finish games, the Fable team has “relentlessly pursued quality” in the game’s conclusion. Fulton hinted that Fable will culminate in a choice that truly challenges players to reflect on their identity, weighing personal costs against the outcome.
This is promising news for fans concerned about a repeat of Fable 2. While the 2008 installment is often regarded as the best in the series, it is also criticized for its disappointing ending that felt out of sync with the franchise’s emphasis on player freedom. Fulton mentioned that players will only be locked into the main storyline during the ending, allowing for a more relaxed exploration of the world and its various systems beforehand.
As with earlier titles in the series, the Fable reboot will feature a wide array of systems that promote player autonomy. An extended gameplay reveal showcased the ability to fall in love, marry, have children, purchase homes, and even run businesses. Players can choose to romance multiple characters and acquire every property in the game’s setting of Albion if they aspire to dominate the world. All these actions will carry consequences, supported by a reputation system to track player choices. The combat system has also been revamped, delivering a satisfying experience.
Developer Playground Games is primarily known for the open-world racing series Forza Horizon, making Fable their first foray into RPGs. The game will feature a talented cast, including notable names like Hayley Atwell, Richard Ayoade, Matt King, and Natasia Demetriou. Despite the extensive content, Fable is expected to take around 15–20 hours to complete the main story. In a move towards console exclusivity, Xbox plans to release Fable on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, as well as Windows PC.
