Developer to Remove AI-Created Game from Platforms

Last summer, indie developer Eero “Rakuel” Laine launched Hardest, a free-to-play card game roguelike that utilized AI-generated assets. However, Laine has since reevaluated his stance on AI and decided to remove Hardest from Steam on January 30. In a message on the game’s Steam page, he credited his change of heart to his partner and explained his initial choice to use AI assets. “I created this game over a couple of months during the summer and opted for AI because university heavily influences students, and many tools are available for free,” Laine shared. “I could generate unlimited images at no cost… But I’ve come to realize that AI isn’t truly free, and it significantly impacts the economy and environment.” He added, “I coded everything myself, so I can create a new game with real assets in the future if I choose. But the current version of this game is a disgrace to all game makers and players. The only ethical choice is to remove it from Steam.” The use of AI-generated assets in game development continues to spark intense debate. One notable studio recently banned all AI-generated content from its titles, with its CEO labeling such assets as “cancerous.” Shortly after Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was awarded Game of the Year at the Indie Game Awards, it lost the title due to “placeholder” AI assets that were later removed. Another upcoming title, Arc Raiders, has faced criticism for employing AI-driven text-to-speech technology. The head of the studio behind Arc Raiders emphasized that they don’t use AI to replace jobs or voice actors, stating, “People need to step back and understand what AI is and how it can greatly assist developers and benefit players. I recognize this is a complex topic.”
