Developers of upcoming Star Wars game face challenges as project hangs in the balance.

Developers at Quantic Dream have initiated a strike in response to looming layoffs, asserting that the narrative-driven Star Wars Eclipse “cannot be finished” if the layoffs go ahead.

Known for titles like Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human, Quantic Dream revealed Star Wars Eclipse at The Game Awards 2021, but has remained largely silent about the project since then. In February 2026, the studio launched a MOBA titled Spellcasters Chronicles, which underperformed and was taken offline earlier this month. Following the closure of Spellcasters Chronicles, reports emerged that Quantic Dream intends to lay off 115 employees.

In reaction to this news, several Quantic Dream staff members staged a strike last week during a visit from Lucasfilm representatives who were assessing the progress of Star Wars Eclipse. Strikers conveyed to an outlet that the game’s development would be unfeasible if over 100 developers were let go from the studio.

“We believe that, as things stand, the game literally cannot be finished if the redundancy plan is implemented as currently scheduled,” a developer named Theo stated. Another developer, Jules, emphasized that the strikes are “far from being an act of sabotage,” arguing, “We could manage to release it with 115 additional people, and that wouldn’t be ‘overstaffed’: it’s what’s needed. We’re understaffed.”

The striking developers at Quantic Dream are convinced that retaining the 115 developers within the Star Wars team, rather than proceeding with layoffs, would enhance the development of Star Wars Eclipse. This approach could also alleviate the pressure on a smaller team facing tight deadlines. Their comments indicate that the game is still far from completion, despite being announced over four and a half years ago.

Neither Quantic Dream nor Lucasfilm has issued a statement regarding the strike. The studio last referenced Star Wars Eclipse when discussing the discontinuation of Spellcasters Chronicles and the upcoming layoffs, asserting, “The development of Star Wars Eclipse is not affected by this decision and continues as planned.”
