It seems that Borderlands 4 may not make its way to Switch 2 after all, as the parent company of Gearbox, Take-Two Interactive, has confirmed that development on the port has been put on hold.

Back in September, Gearbox announced an indefinite delay for Borderlands 4 on Switch 2, citing the need for “additional development and polish.” However, Take-Two has now made it clear that the port is unlikely to happen anytime soon.

In a recent interview, Take-Two spokesperson Alan Lewis stated, “We made the difficult decision to pause development on that SKU,” referring specifically to Borderlands 4 for Switch 2.

This news is undoubtedly disappointing for Borderlands fans who have been eagerly anticipating the game on Switch 2. It’s hard to forget the excitement from July when Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford announced the Switch 2 release date for October while praising Nintendo’s new console as “a fricking awesome platform,” only to now face the reality that the port may never see the light of day.

“Our focus continues to be delivering quality post-launch content for players and ongoing improvements to optimize the game,” Lewis added. “We’re continuing to collaborate closely with our friends at Nintendo. We have ‘PGA Tour 2K25’ and ‘WWE 2K26’ coming out for Switch 2, and we’re incredibly excited about bringing more of our titles to that platform in the future.”

Given Borderlands 4’s struggles on more powerful hardware, it’s not surprising that Gearbox faced challenges in making it work on Switch 2. With pre-orders previously available and Pitchford’s hype surrounding the release, the shift from anticipation to this news is quite jarring.

While Borderlands 4 won’t be on our list of the best Switch 2 games, there are still plenty of other titles worth exploring.
