I honestly never expected to see a major content update for Diablo 2, let alone an entirely new class. But here we are! Blizzard has just announced that the substantial Diablo 2 Resurrected update, Reign of the Warlock, is now available for free download, introducing the brand new Warlock class to the game.
Blizzard came ready for Diablo’s 30th birthday stream, unveiling the first new class for Diablo 2 in over 25 years, the third new class for Diablo 4 since its launch in 2023, and if I’m counting correctly, the fifth new class for Diablo Immortal.
To clarify, the Warlock class is currently exclusive to Diablo 2. It will be added to Diablo 4 with the launch of Lord of Hatred in April, and to Immortal this summer.
As the first playable Warlock in Diablo history, this new class allows you to summon three different types of demons: the Goatman, the Tainted, and the Defiler, each with unique abilities to fight alongside you. However, Blizzard emphasizes that “the true heart of the class” lies in its ability to bind a single demon at a time, creating strategic decisions about when to devour them for temporary buffs. “Do you keep that demon around for its abilities? Or do you consume it at the perfect moment to turn the tide?” asks Diablo 2 Resurrected producer Matthew Cederquist in an Xbox Wire post.
“This is a class that rewards players who think ahead, plan encounters, and experiment,” Cederquist added.
If that strategic gameplay isn’t your style, there’s also a melee-focused branch that allows you to wield two-handed weapons alongside your spellbook for a hybrid playstyle. Cederquist noted that this approach “upends every theorycraft we’ve ever explored,” calling it “a bold nod to the Hexblade Warlock from Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition.”
Having played Diablo 2 for 25 years, I still find myself diving into it more than Diablo 4, thanks to Resurrected. Earlier today, I told a colleague I was “hoping against hope” for something new for my old favorite, and now I can’t wait to clock out and start my Warlock journey. It’s going to be surreal stepping into the Rogue Encampment as something other than the same classes I’ve been experimenting with since childhood. Is it 5 PM yet?
