Diablo 4 Unveils Lord of Hatred Expansion and Release Date at The Game Awards

After a lengthy period of silence regarding the second expansion for Diablo 4, Blizzard Entertainment made a splash at The Game Awards with an exciting announcement, including a release date and a wealth of new information. The upcoming expansion, titled Lord of Hatred, is set to launch on April 28, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

Lord of Hatred will mark the conclusion of Diablo 4’s Age of Hatred saga, placing players alongside a recently returned Lilith as they face off against Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred, in a fresh campaign set in the Skovos region. This island chain is fraught with natural disasters—think volcanic eruptions and fierce storms that will challenge your journey—along with hellish trials and a part of Sanctuary that Blizzard has long wanted to explore.

The beloved Paladin class will make its return, bringing a divine presence to Skovos as part of the Lord of Hatred expansion (or even earlier if you pre-purchase). This iteration of the Paladin will feature some unique twists for Diablo 4, including the classic “sword and board” melee attacks and defensive skills, alongside new auras and holy conjuration abilities. Additionally, players can look forward to an angelic transformation that turns the Paladin into an “avatar of celestial justice,” inspired by Tyrael.

In addition to the Paladin, Lord of Hatred will introduce a second class, though details about this new addition are still under wraps. However, Blizzard hinted that this unrevealed class will “reshape the battlefield” when it arrives.

Blizzard promises that Lord of Hatred will bring “one of the most comprehensive gameplay evolutions since launch,” featuring changes to endgame challenges and loot collection, as well as several long-requested adjustments to item handling and crafting in Diablo 4. The Horadric Cube from Diablo 2 is making a comeback, allowing players to combine various items for improved results. While specifics on its functionality remain unclear, given the mixed reception of the reforging process in the Vessel of Hatred expansion, it’s likely that the cube will manage upgrades and alchemy similarly to its predecessors in Diablo 3.

Other enhancements include revamped skill trees for all eight classes and a loot filter designed to help players target the gear they truly want. Players will also have the option to create a “war plan” before diving into endgame activities, allowing for a more customized experience. A new horde mode called Echoing Hatred will challenge players with waves of increasingly powerful foes, and for those looking for a breather, there’s now the option to fish in Sanctuary’s rivers and lakes. While there’s no guarantee that what you catch won’t be a mutated menace, it certainly offers a refreshing change of pace.

As we eagerly await the arrival of Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred in 2026, players can look forward to seeing the Paladin in action and exploring the new Skovos region.
