Diablo 4’s Hidden Cow Level Discovered After Three Years and Two Expansions

Diablo 4’s elusive secret cow level has finally been uncovered after an extensive search that began with the game’s launch in June 2023, leaving some players skeptical about its existence.

This was all part of Blizzard’s clever design. The developer has a history of teasing the idea of secret cow levels while actually including them in Diablo titles since the late ’90s. Initially, the original Diablo didn’t feature a cow level; it was merely an urban legend among fans that became a running joke with the developers. Eventually, Blizzard introduced the Moo Moo Farm in Diablo 2, where players faced off against a horde—sorry, herd—of axe-wielding cows.

With Diablo 4, Blizzard played a long game, mirroring the intricate storytelling that unfolded across the original game and its expansions, Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred.

Unlocking Diablo 4’s secret cow level is a complex journey that spans all three chapters of the game. It starts with the task of slaughtering 666 cows to complete an extensive quest in the base game, followed by item hunting and more cow slaying in Vessel of Hatred, and then searching for rare relics in Lord of Hatred to combine in the newly introduced Horadric Cube. This leads players to a hidden cow island filled with cryptic clues—like a ring of cows arranged like clock hours and portals seemingly tied to days of the week—along with some red herrings, such as the ability to fish for cows. The clues have finally been deciphered.

However, players have expressed some disappointment with the level itself, which consists of a straightforward brawl with cows followed by a showdown against the Cow King boss. The loot dropped by the boss is mostly comical rather than practical: a crown that grants a variety of absurd bonuses depending on the day of the week it’s worn. One of the highlights: “Saturday: +1.3% chance to ignore Crowd Control if you have already been Crowd Controlled for over 10 weeks in Helltide.” This seems to be a tongue-in-cheek nod to the “damage on Tuesdays” meme that circulated among the Diablo 4 community early on, thanks to the game’s initially convoluted itemization.

Disappointed players have noted that the cow levels in Diablo 2 and 3 offered genuinely useful loot drops. But do those drops come with “+10.26% Moobility damage while mooving”? They do not.
