Diablo 5 Reaches Significant Production Milestone
One of the most surprising announcements from this year’s BlizzCon was the confirmation that Diablo 5 is in the works. Blizzard is so confident in this project that they’ve already set a release window for spring 2029. While that might seem far off, the developer is making the most of the time available, and it appears the project has entered a crucial phase.
Thanks to a post from Neil David Carter, the cinematic director for Diablo, we now know that filming for the game’s cinematics has kicked off. Carter shared a photo of an empty motion capture studio with the caption “First shoot #Diablo5.” Although the image doesn’t reveal much, the fact that filming has started is a significant sign of progress in Diablo 5’s development.
The fact that the team is working on cutscenes suggests that the game’s storyline is mostly finalized. While motion capture can also be used for various animations, the focus on cinematics indicates that narrative development is a priority.
From the initial announcement, we learned that Diablo 5 will take place 100 years after the events of Diablo 4. Sanctuary will have fallen, and the iconic antagonist Diablo will return, seemingly having triumphed in the eternal struggle between good and evil. This sets the stage for a post-apocalyptic world that will present players with entirely new challenges.
If Blizzard stays on schedule, Diablo 5 will launch six years after Diablo 4. The latest installment continues to receive updates, with the Lord of Hatred expansion released just this year. While some fans expressed concern that the focus on Diablo 5 might lead to neglect of Diablo 4, the studio has reassured players that support for Diablo 4 will continue as long as the community remains engaged.
