Director Andy Muschietti envisions a 6+ hour supercut of both films, including never-before-seen footage: “It’s still a big dream of mine.”
As the first season of Derry wraps up, fans are buzzing about the future of the franchise, particularly the promised supercut of the It films that director Andy Muschietti has been dreaming about for years.
In a recent Reddit AMA, a fan inquired, “Mr. Andy Muschietti has previously talked about doing an Extended Cut that merges It and It Chapter Two into one seamless experience with hours of unused footage. Is this Cut still happening?” Muschietti responded, “Yes, still a big dream of mine. Since we’ve been involved heavily in this show, we haven’t had time to execute it. Crossing fingers.”
Muschietti first ventured into Stephen King’s universe with the 2017 film It, followed by its sequel, It: Chapter 2, in 2019. Both films closely adapted King’s ’80s novel, with the first focusing on the Losers Club in the ’80s and the sequel showing the group returning to Derry 27 years later. After the sequel’s release, Muschietti briefly mentioned the idea of a supercut that would run nearly 6.5 hours, combining both films along with never-before-seen footage and scenes that were left out.
One notable deleted scene featured a celestial turtle named Maturin, who appears in Bill’s basement in the second film. This ancient cosmic entity serves as a counterbalance to evil beings like Pennywise, but the scene was cut for pacing, as it was primarily underwater.
Fans have praised Muschietti for his ability to explore King’s universe without the constraints of time or story, with many highlighting the show as having the “greatest depiction of Pennywise in any media format,” which compensates for his more subdued portrayal in the films.
Even if the supercut never materializes, Muschietti’s journey in Derry is far from over. With the first season of Welcome to Derry concluding on December 14, the showrunner has plans for two more seasons, with season 2 set in 1935 and season 3 taking place in 1908. The first season already revisited 1908, showcasing how the evil entity lured and killed circus clown Bob Grey, marking the first appearance of Pennywise the Dancing Clown.
Derry season 1 is currently available for streaming on HBO in the US and Now in the UK.
